Alexandra Park in Oldham was inundated with runners of all ages and abilities on Saturday 24th July for the family Run 4 Fun event held as part of Oldham’s Olympic 2012 weekend celebrations.
The free family event was sponsored by Community 1st Oldham, Oldham’s local LIFT company, and organised by national sports development charity StreetGames, Oldham Community Leisure and the Health Improvement Team from Oldham Community Health Services to encourage participation in sport, and raise awareness of healthy living.
Joined by local mascot Chaddy the Owl, Oldham Athletic Community Trust and the local street cheer team, the event was a massive success, with over 300 people taking part to run, jog or walk or pram push the 1 kilometre course around the park, and even the weather managed to stay dry, ensuring everybody finished the course in high spirits.
As the Run4Fun is all about participation rather than winning, everyone who completed the course received a medal, with groups from local programmes such as MEND taking part.
Neil Charlesworth, General Manager of Community 1st Oldham, commented: “The Run 4 Fun was a great family day out and it is fantastic to see so many people joining in and enjoying the chance to have fun and get fit at the same time in the beautiful setting of Alexandra Park.”
Community 1st Oldham is committed to supporting local healthy improvement activities such as this event.
Following the success of the Community 1st Healthy Living Sponsorship programme in Oldham last year, Community 1st Oldham is delighted that it has been successful in securing a Sportsmatch award to match their funding for the programme for another year.
StreetGames is a national charity dedicated to developing doorstep sport in disadvantaged communities and Community 1st Oldham sponsors a programme of healthy living initiatives and events run by StreetGames, including the annual free entry Oldham Run4Fun and a range of sport and youth activities across Oldham.
Community 1st Oldham is proud to provide this additional sponsorship to support these worthwhile activities in Oldham.
