Community 1st Oldham and StreetGames bring free family fun run to Alexandra Park

Community 1st Oldham and national sports development charity StreetGames are hosting a free to enter family fun run at Alexandra Park in Oldham on Saturday 24th July, starting at 11am, as part of Oldham’s Olympic 2012 weekend celebrations.

The Run 4 Fun event is open to all ages and abilities to run, jog, walk, wheelchair, or pram-push the 1 kilometre course around the park, and everyone who takes part will receive a medal. Fancy dress is optional.

Last year’s event was a great success with over 150 people taking part and enjoying a fun day out with some exercise thrown in and it’s hoped this year’s event will see even more people taking part.

The event has been organised by Community 1st Oldham, national sports development charity StreetGames, Oldham Community Leisure, Oldham Council and the Health Improvement Team from Oldham Community Health Services, to encourage participation in sport, and raise awareness of healthy living.

John Dwan, managing director of Sport4Life, the organisation delivering the event on behalf of StreetGames and Community 1st Oldham, is hoping to attract even more participants than last year: “The Run 4 Fun is completely free to enter and is a fun activity for everyone: families, children, groups of friends. This will be the third Run 4 Fun in Oldham and we’re aiming to make this event even bigger and better than the previous two.”

Neil Charlesworth, General Manager of Community 1st Oldham, who are working in partnership with NHS Oldham and Oldham Council to deliver the most significant investment in primary health care and community facilities in recent years said: “Community 1st Oldham is proud to support this event in Oldham’s beautiful Alexandra Park. We are dedicated to delivering modern health and community facilities in the Oldham area which really meet the needs of the communities in which they are located, and by working with StreetGames on the Run 4 Fun activities we hope to deliver events that will bring communities together to have fun and get fit.”

The event is part of Oldham’s Olympic 2012 weekend celebrations with other events including: a climbing wall in Alexandra Park on Saturday from 9am, Oldham Sporting Honours Event at Oldham Sports Centre at 12 noon on Saturday, and Park Runs being launched by Oldham Community Health Services at 9am.

Chaddy the Owl will be joining the Fun Run and the Oldham Athletic Community Trust team will be providing football coaching & Street Cheer sessions.
